I'm happy you noted the 'common Vulcan' thing. I had a vision in my head of Spock doing something very manly and hardcore strong, and thus surprising Jim with his knowledge of common chores around a rural farm setting, but the thought of putting Spock through that in the middle of all that freezing weather proved too much in the end. So this was my alternate. Glad it worked. ;)
